Gellert Bath is the most famous Art Nouveau thermal baths in Budapest, Hungary as well as in Europe. Gellert Spa, founded in 1918. Visiting the bath is indeed a beautiful and historical experience. You can visit the main hall free of charge, or spend a whole day of relaxation in the “Palace of Baths” as Gellert Bath is often referred to.
Booking Gellert BathsThere are 10 pools of various sizes and temperatures. Gellert Bath is open every day from 9 am to 7 pm, even on bank holidays, like May 1, August 20 or Christmas. Besides the outdoor wave pool (now known as the outdoor leisure pool), which is a big hit in summer months, there are several geothermal pools open to both men and women. Besides, you can get massage treatments: Gellert Spa Massage, enjoy the saunas, the sunbathing terrace looking at the Gellert Hill, and relax by the geothermal pools with some beer, wine, champagne.
Wave Pool (no waves currently!): Unfortunately, the almost hundred year old innovative wave pool machine has been in need of maintenance since 2019. Due to its special historical value and the complex nature of the machinery built in the 1920s, there is no set date when the waves will start running again in the pool. Therefore the outdoor wave pool currently works as an open air pool (with no artificial waves generated), when the outdoor pool is in season (normally mid May to mid October, subject to weather in Budapest).
As Gellert Bath is one building with the spa hotel named Gellert Hotel, you can enjoy a fascinating holiday in one of the best spa hotels in Budapest, or simply enjoy the bath facilities as a bath visitor (Gellert Bath is open to all, adults, children, men, women, and all its areas are wheelchair accessible)
Fun: try the open-air leisure pool, and explore the labyrinth of the Art Nouveau palace revealing 8 artistic pools with naturally warm spring waters. Both Szechenyi Bath and Gellert Bath are a maze. We recommend getting your own Gellert Spa Map to aid your exploration.
Booking Gellert BathsRelaxing: soak in the geothermal waters coming from deep under Gellert Hill all day long, summer or winter, and book a massage in advance to enhance the effectiveness of the waters’ healing powers.
Historical: the spring waters of Gellert Bath were discovered in the 15th century, by the 1920s hundreds of thousands of bathers were enjoying the natural healing powers of the geothermal waters. Explore the elegant palace and historical beauty of Gellert Bath.
Special: the entry prices of Gellert Bath are certainly not cheap, but it also ensures that Gellert Bath is not packed with thousands of bathers (like Szechenyi Bath). Enjoy the space, the beauty and the high-quality professional services. You can add a 20 min aroma massage therapy to your bath entry (from €42) with a private cabin. More about Gellert Spa Tickets here.
Massage Treatments: massage treatments are very well priced. Please check out the massage packages (tickets, cabin and massage) below:

Booking Gellert SpaIf you have just 1-2-3 days in Budapest, and you wish to visit the most exquisite thermal bath in the City of Spas, we recommend choosing Gellert Bath.
Having said that, the baths in Budapest are worth a visit for their beauties and characteristics, so if you can schedule more baths in your visit, you will not be disappointed or feel bored.
Each bath, Szechenyi Bath, Rudas Bath and the summer pools like Palatinus, has a lot to offer and will give you a special experience in Hungary.
Do not take our word for it, come and see for yourself.
Hello
Will the wave pool in Gellert bath be open in July 2024? Can we come with kids in the wave pool (age 4, 7 and 10) ?
Hello Amelie,
Thank you for contacting us.
The wave pool in Gellert Bath normally opens in the summer time and is open until early October. However the regulations may be changing in the thermal baths regarding children. Unfortunately, children under 14 years old are not allowed to enter the thermal bath pools where the water is of high temperature and the minerals are concentrated. Non-thermal pools can be used independently by able swimmers from the age of 6 onwards with parental supervision (over 14 years of age without parental supervision too). Kindly note that children are expected to behave like little adults in a primarily adult oriented thermal bath to reflect and ensure the spa qualities of Gellert Spa (avoiding noisy or unruly behaviour and maintaining a calm atmosphere). This may feel restrictive to some children and they may miss typical fun water elements (like slides and chutes). Therefore, we would kindly suggest visiting a more family oriented and family friendly bath for relaxation.
We are sorry about the inconvenience and would encourage you and the children to find out about more child friendly bathing options in Budapest, including Palatinus Bath, Csillaghegyi Bath or AquaWorld water theme park offering family bathing / spa experience for younger children and parents in the city of Budapest.
Wanted to confirm whether the outdoor pools are now fully working?
Hello Camille,
Thank you for contacting us.
The maintenance works in Szechenyi Baths are finished and the outdoor pools are fully working again.
Currently there are no maintenance works in Gellert Spa either.
However, please note that Szechenyi Bath will be closed to visitors on the 8th April and Gellert Baths will be closed on the 9th April due to annual cleaning.
Thank you for your understanding.
Have a great time visiting Budapest!
in your web site you say that the Szechenyi exterior pool is under maintenance till 12/5/2024, is it true?
i will stay in Budapest the first week of may and I would like to know if the outdoor pool will be open
Hello Norma,
Thank you for contacting us.
Indeed, the outdoor swimming pool (for doing laps) will be under maintenance in Szechenyi Bath until May 12. But the other two outdoor pools (Outdoor Thermal Pool and Outdoor Whirlpool) will be available.
Have a lovely spring break in Budapest!
Will the outdoor pool be open today ? Wave pool
Hello Lee,
Thank you for getting in touch.
The outdoor thermal pool is open all year around. However the wave pool is still closed. It is scheduled to reopen mid May.
We hope you enjoy visiting Gellert Spa!
hi there, is it correct that I have to wear a swim cap? can these be bought at the baths?
Dear Claire,
Swimming cap is only required if you wish to swim in the cool-watered sports pool designated for lap swimming.
For all other areas, including the thermal baths, plunge pools, and the outdoor central swimming pool, a swimming cap is not required.
Enjoy your stay in Budapest!
Hi, is the changing area of the thermal bath segregated by gender for the lockers or not?
Hello John,
Thank you for contacting us.
Yes the lockers are in women-only and men-only public changing areas.
Hi,
Hope you’re well!
We’re coming to Budapest on an Easter weekend and was wondering if you still have some space available either on the 31st of March or 1st of April?
Many thanks,
Ruta

Have a lovely spring break in Budapest!
Hi,2 questions.
Firsly, will our 8 year old be able to join us on 30 April?
Secondly, will the outside wave pool be open (i see firecast is fir 26 degrees outside temp)
Hello Richard,
Thank you for contacting us.
The wave pool in Gellert Bath normally opens in the summer months, around end of May – mid June and is open until early October.
We would encourage you and your family to check out more child friendly bathing options in Budapest, which are absolutely amazing. Including the large and welcoming Palatinus Bath on Margaret Island (lots of green area; to avoid queues please arrive before 10 am), Csillaghegyi Bath (less busy and lovely bathing complex with lots of shady trees and a big slide) or AquaWorld water theme park (multiple slides) offering family bathing / spa experience for younger children and parents in the city of Budapest.
Hi – I am trying to book the Gellert Baths for the Sunday 31 March. Are you able to please advise if this is possible as the website doesn’t reflect this date. Many thanks
